Work With Deanna: Physician Coaching Services
My program is eight weeks, and each week you get a one-hour 1:1 coaching session with me and a group coaching session both by zoom. Your plan will be as individualized as you are and specific to your needs.
I believe there are three keys to solving burnout.
- First, you need to fix the things you can with yourself. I am not blaming you. I am recommending ownership and self-care. I was not taking care of myself. I was not exercising and eating well. I was not sleeping. I needed to learn a way to relax. I finally (after about six different tries) learned a type of meditation that worked for me. I did not understand burnout. I needed to learn about the programming I received during medical school and residency, creating limiting beliefs. I was over-charting. I needed to make the EHR “work for me.” I do not believe the old saying, “the patient comes first.” If we do not take care of ourselves first, we can’t take good care of others.
- Second, we need a culture and community. Sometimes we feel so alone and isolated. I was working so much that I didn’t have time for friends and felt like I was the only one failing at my career. During the group coaching, you will be amazed when another physician starts talking, and we all have the same issues. You will hear someone talk about the same thoughts that are in your brain.
- Lastly, is what I like to call living with purpose and intention. Thought-work is a coaching technique teaching we have choices regarding thoughts and feelings vs. just reacting to what is happening. Sometimes we cannot change the circumstances we are put in, but we can change how we choose to deal with them. Between circumstance and response, there is a space. Unfortunately, we have not been programmed genetically to take the time to think about our responses. When we were getting chased by dinosaurs, we did not want to stop and think about our response, right? We should RUN! But when we conflict at work, we get to take the time in that space to decide. What is my thought about this? Do I want to keep that thought? Does that thought serve me? How does that thought make me feel? What action is that going to lead to? I am going to teach you all of this.
We must face the fact that the electronic health record is not going away. The only way to live it is to make it work for you. I will offer specific training to help you do just that.
